Student Grants 2012/2013

Please note that for the 2012/2013 college year, City of Limerick VEC will not be assessing new applications for Third Level Grants. A new ONLINE ONLY grant applications system is being introduced for 2012.  All new applications will be made online to a single awarding authority, Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) through www.studentfinance.ie.

The details for the 2012 Student Grant Scheme are due to be announced in May and the SUSI online application system will be available from that date.  You can continue to check www.studentfinance.ie for information and updates in the meantime. 

Students who are currently in receipt of a grant from us and who are progressing to the next year of the same course will continue to be assessed and paid by us.  If you are changing course or progessing to a new course you will need to apply to SUSI.

If you are thinking of furthering your education but are worried about the cost of full-time study, we may be able to help.  On behalf of the Department of Education and Skills we administer a means tested Grant scheme, which offers financial support to limerick city students attending full-time courses at, Universities, Institutes of Technology and approved PLC Colleges.

City of Limerick VEC administers applications from residents of Limerick City (excluding County Limerick area).

If you are pursuing a full-time degree course at a University and have not previously received funding from us then you should apply to Limerick City Council for funding www.limerickcity.ie

Important Notice:

Please note the following changes to the distance for the non-adjacent rate for 2011/12:

The qualifying distance criterion for entitlement to the higher non-adjacent rate of grant (distance from home to the college) will be changed from 15 miles (24km) to 28 miles (45km).  This measure will take effect for all students both new and renewal from the start of the 2011/12 academic year.

The automatic eligiblity of mature students to the higher non-adjacent rate of payment, will no longer apply, effective for all students both new and renewal from the commencement of the 2011/12 academic year.

€200 annual contribution charge for PLC courses: 

Any learner who enrols on an approved PLC course is eligible to pay the €200 PLC programme participant contribution.

The contribution is an annual contribution.  Eligible participants on PLC courses of more than one year's duration must pay the contribution for each year of that course.

 

The following categories of participant are exempt from paying the contribution:-

Full medical card holders in their own right and their dependent children.
Those who are eligible under the student grant scheme.
Those in receipt of the Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) or VTOS payments.

 

Students in Receipt of Back to Education Allowance /VTOS Payments

Students in receipt of BTEA/VTOS payments are no longer eligible for student maintenance grants.  However students attending IT's and Universites can apply for a Fees Only grant.  Please contact us for further information.

HOW TO APPLY

First Time Applicants
All new entrants must:-

1. Apply online at www.studentfinance.ie 
or
2.
Download and print the grant application form at www.studentfinance.ie, then complete and return to the relevant authority.

The application form, if downloaded, must be completed in full, signed and returned to us along with the relevant supporting documentation.  It is advisable that fully completed forms are submitted together with required documentation as early as possible to enable this office to process applications in a timely manner.

When you  have accepted a place on an approved full-time course you will need to complete a Final Course Acceptance Form

FA1 Form - To be completed if you have accepted a place on a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate course in Ireland.

FA2 Form - To be completed if you have accepted a place on  a full-time Post Leaving Certificate course (PLC) in Ireland.

SA1 Form - To be completed if you have accepted a place on a a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate course in another EU Member State (excluding Ireland).

Students are advised to submit their Grant Application as soon as possible.  It is not necessary to wait until the CAO offers have been issued.

Late applications will not be dealt with until all others are finalised.

Candidates should refer to the Guidance Notes when completing the Application Form.

Only original documents will be accepted.  All documents will be copied and returned as a matter of routine as soon as processing begins on each application.

Review Forms for Existing Grant Holders:

Review Forms will be issued to all students who are currently in receipt of a grant and are entering the next year of their course, or continuing to study at Postgraduate Level.  These forms will be posted to students in June 2011.

The review form should be completed and returned to City of Limerick VEC at the address below, along with your examination results for 2010/11.

Some students may have their income re-assessed.  If you are applying for the Special Rate of Maintenance Grant or have been selected for re-assessment, you will need to submit income documentation for the 2010 Tax Year.

If you have completed a PLC Course in 2010/11 and you are continuing to study in an IT or University then you will need to complete a new application form.

If you have completed a Higher Certificate or Ordinary Degree course in 2010/11 and you are progresssing to an Honours Degree you will need to complete a new application form.
